Oracle Health PathNet Isn't Losing You Money. The Charge Handoff Is.

No lab goes live on PathNet expecting it to negotiate with payers. It was built to receive the order, track the specimen, verify the result, and fire a charge event. The money leaks out later, in the gap between what the bench actually performed and what Charge Services turns into a billable line. Most lab directors don’t spot it until a denial batch lands or outreach aging passes 90 days, and at that point it isn’t a fix, it’s a write-off.

Here's where it actually happens, by platform:

Where It Happens
What Happens
Real Cost
PathNet General Lab & Microbiology — Order Catalog to Bill Item Drift
Each orderable in the PathNet catalog links to a bill item in the CS Pricing Tool. After the January CPT update or a new PLA code, that link often keeps the old code. Culture workups, organism IDs, and susceptibilities fire on the wrong event or not at all.
Broken orderable-to-bill item links are the largest recoverable category we find in first audits.
Charge Services — Charge Points & Tier Groups Left on Default
Charge Services decides when a charge drops and at what price. If the charge point sits on order instead of verify, cancelled tests still bill. If an outreach client sits in the wrong tier group, the claim goes to insurance when it should be client-billed.
Labs that never revisit charge points and tiers bill claims that post cleanly and still pay wrong. Clean does not always mean correctly paid.
Anatomic Pathology & Outreach — Units, Client Bill & the 14-Day Rule
AP cases need 88305 billed per specimen and IHC split between 88342 and 88341 per antibody. Outreach requisitions arrive without insurance or a signed ABN, and the Medicare 14-day rule decides whether the hospital or the lab owns the claim.
This produces the denials nobody can explain. The case was billed as always; the payer just counted units or ownership differently.
Every Lab — Medical Necessity, Prior Auth & Timely Filing
Molecular and genetic tests often need prior authorization, a MolDX Z-code, or diagnosis codes that meet the LCD or NCD. If nobody checks before the specimen runs, the claim goes out clean and comes back denied, while suspended charges eat into the filing window.
Timely filing denials are avoidable almost 100% of the time. They're a process gap, not a payer decision.
None of this means Oracle Health PathNet is doing anything wrong. It means lab billing is its own discipline, built around how PathNet and Charge Services create charges, and that’s what most labs are missing.

That’s exactly what the free audit below is built to find out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Oracle Health PathNet, and how do its lab modules, Charge Services, and Laboratory Outreach work together?

PathNet is the laboratory information system inside Oracle Health Millennium, the platform formerly known as Cerner. General Laboratory, Microbiology, Blood Bank, and Anatomic Pathology manage orders, specimens, and results; Charge Services turns those events into bill items; and Laboratory Outreach supports outside clients with courier, supply, and phlebotomy tools. Any mix needs billing mapped to how the build creates charges.

Do we need a specialized billing company if our lab already runs on Oracle Health PathNet?

PathNet manages orders, results, and charge events, but it doesn't guarantee a clean, correctly paid claim. Most lab billing errors happen between what the bench performed and what Charge Services drops, which is why labs on Millennium benefit from Oracle Health PathNet billing services run by people who know those patterns.

Can TransLabs Billing work with our existing PathNet setup without changing our workflow?

Yes. Our onboarding maps to your existing order catalog, bill items, tier groups, and outreach workflow rather than asking your lab to change how it already runs.

What does the free Oracle Health PathNet billing audit include?

A review of sample claims, bill item links, charge point and tier settings, and coding data from your Millennium environment to find denial trends, missed charges, and coding gaps, delivered at no cost and with no obligation.

Do you handle anatomic pathology and outreach lab billing on PathNet?

Yes. We manage per-specimen AP units, IHC coding, client-bill versus insurance splits, ABNs, and date-of-service reviews under the Medicare 14-day rule, alongside standard commercial and Medicaid claims.

How much does it cost to outsource lab billing to a company like TransLabs?

Outsourced lab billing is usually priced as a percentage of collections rather than a flat fee, which keeps the incentive aligned; we only get paid when you get paid. The exact percentage depends on claim volume, test mix, and how much A/R cleanup is needed. We quote a specific number after the free audit, since a rate quoted without real claims data isn't worth trusting.
