Your Haemonetics Software Isn't Losing You Money. The Blood Bank Billing Handoff Is.

No hospital installed SafeTrace Tx expecting it to argue with payers. That was never its job; it checks compatibility, tracks every unit, issues the product, and helps close the loop at the bedside. The money leaks out in between, in the gap between what the blood bank actually did and what the claim says was done. Most lab directors miss it until denials land or aging passes 90 days, and by then it isn’t a fix, it’s a write-off.

Here's where it actually happens, by platform:

Where It Happens
What Happens
Real Cost
SafeTrace Tx — Type & Screen, Antibody Work & Crossmatch Charges
ABO, Rh, and antibody screens (86900, 86901, 86850) are simple. Antibody identification (86870) often needs more than one panel, and crossmatches bill per unit: 86920 to 86922 for serologic methods and 86923 for electronic. Charges built on the order, not the test performed, bill the wrong method.
Under-billed antibody workups and crossmatch units are the largest recoverable category we find in first blood bank audits.
Product Issue & BloodTrack — Issued vs. Transfused Units
Blood products need the right HCPCS P-code, units, and revenue code for each component, including irradiated, washed, or pooled versions. When a charge drops at issue but the unit comes back to the blood bank, it has to be reversed. Unmatched BloodTrack records let errors pile up both ways.
Billing on issue alone means refunds on returned units and missed modified products. Clean does not always mean correctly paid.
TEG 6s Hemostasis — Viscoelastic Testing Codes
TEG panels are coded differently from one payer to the next. Some labs bill component codes such as 85347, 85384, 85390, and 85576, while 85396 describes a whole-blood viscoelastic assay with interpretation per day. Stacking codes without checking payer policy invites recoupments.
This produces the denials nobody can explain. The TEG was billed as always; the payer just reads the code set differently.
Every Transfusion Service — Blood Deductible, Medical Necessity & Timely Filing
Medicare's blood deductible covers the first three pints each year, outpatient transfusion needs 36430, and transfusions need documented clinical need. Miss these and the claim goes out clean and comes back denied, while lag eats into the filing window.
Timely filing denials are avoidable almost 100% of the time. They're a process gap, not a payer decision.
None of this means Haemonetics software is doing anything wrong. It means blood bank billing is its own discipline, built around how SafeTrace Tx and BloodTrack actually record tests, units, and transfusions, and that’s what most hospitals are missing.

Not sure which of these is actually happening in your claims?

That’s exactly what the free audit below is built to find out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Haemonetics, and what do SafeTrace Tx, BloodTrack, and TEG each do?

Haemonetics is a Boston-based medical technology company founded in 1971. SafeTrace Tx is its blood bank information system for transfusion management, used by hundreds of hospitals and offered to Epic hospitals since 2022. BloodTrack tracks blood products and supports closed-loop safety at the bedside, and the TEG 6s analyzer measures how blood clots. Haemonetics sold its U.S. donor software in 2020 but kept its hospital transfusion tools.

Do we need a specialized billing company if our blood bank already uses SafeTrace Tx?

SafeTrace Tx manages compatibility, inventory, and issue, but it doesn't guarantee a clean, correctly paid claim. Most blood bank billing errors happen in the handoff between what was tested or transfused and what gets charged, which is why hospitals benefit from Haemonetics billing services run by people who know those patterns.

Can TransLabs Billing work with our existing Haemonetics setup without changing our workflow?

Yes. Our onboarding maps to your existing SafeTrace Tx charges, BloodTrack records, and hospital billing system rather than asking your blood bank to change how it already runs.

What does the free blood bank billing audit include?

A review of sample claims, crossmatch and antibody charges, blood product billing, and returned-unit credits to find denial trends, missed units, and coding gaps, delivered at no cost and with no obligation.

Do you handle blood product, crossmatch, and TEG billing?

Yes. We manage per-unit crossmatch coding, antibody workups, P-codes and revenue codes, the blood deductible, outpatient transfusions, and TEG code sets by payer, alongside standard commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid lab claims. Yes. We support hospital outreach, reference, and pathology labs, including those with several LIS or EHR systems feeding one billing platform, alongside standard commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid lab claims.

How much does it cost to outsource blood bank and lab billing to a company like TransLabs?

Outsourced lab billing is usually priced as a percentage of collections rather than a flat fee, which keeps the incentive aligned; we only get paid when you get paid. The exact percentage depends on claim volume, test mix, and how much A/R cleanup is needed. We quote a specific number after the free audit, since a rate quoted without real claims data isn't worth trusting.
